Beatles - The White Album [1968]

Posted by admin on March 30th, 2007

Amazon.com essential recording
Better known as the “White Album,” this was meant to be the record that brought them back to earth after three years of studio experimentation. Instead, it took them all over the place, continuing to burst the envelope of pop music. Lennon and McCartney were still at the height of their powers, with Lennon in particular growing into one of rock’s towering figures. But even McCartney could still rock, and the amazement on “Helter Skelter” was that he had vocal cords at the end. From Beach Boys knock-offs to reggae and to the unknown (”Revolution #9″), this has it all. Some records have legend written all over them; this is one. –Chris Nickson

Akon - Konvicted [2006]

Posted by admin on March 30th, 2007

Amazon.com
If R&B has been drifting lately, Konvicted proves Akon’s ready to take the wheel: His reedy voice encapsulates Jersey, Jamaica, and continents beyond (Africa, most notably); his wait-a-beat delivery enhances his high-flying hooks; and his attitude mulches thuggery and womanizing into something worth spreading around. If that’s not indication enough he’s on a roll, consider the accolades Konvicted is racking up–a Grammy nod for “Smack That” (featuring Eminem), a No. 1 single with “I Wanna Love You” (featuring Snoop Dogg), sales in the millions. To count Akon a musical groundbreaker, though, you have to be ready to embrace a new genre that might take Brian McKnight and Usher fans a little getting used to: hardcore R&B. Both “I Wanna Love You” and “Smack That” don’t shy away from raunch, and tracks like “Tired of Runnin’” and “Shake Down” bring on an MC edge that belongs more to the street than to the bedroom. Still, count on Akon to convince holdouts he’s worth hearing; both his message and his manner bear the marks of the unstoppable. –Tammy La Gorce

Track Lists:
1. Shake Down
2. Blown Away
3. Smack That - Eminem
4. I Wanna Love You - Snoop Dogg
5. The Rain
6. Never Took The Time
7. Mama Africa
8. I Can’t Wait
9. Gangsta Bop
10. Tired Of Runnin’
11. Once In A While
12. Don’t Matter

Shania Twain - Up [2002]

Posted by admin on March 30th, 2007

Amazon.com
Give Shania Twain points for honesty. Up!, her first new release in five years, offers both pop and country versions of the same 19 songs, the red disc boasting pop renditions while the green proffers country. It’s a smart idea, since it allows Twain the freedom to dress a song in whatever arrangements and instrumentation she pleases–without setting herself up for criticism as to whether Canada’s Queen of the Bare Midriff spat on the Holy Grail of Nashville. Often, the only difference is the substitution of pedal steel, fiddle, and banjo for strings, guitars, and keyboards. In these situations, where she employs the same riffs and melodic strains, the country version usually pales in comparison; however, the green disc wins on those songs where the subject matter hits closer to home, especially the unwed mother tune “I Ain’t Goin’ Down.” Twain was never truly a country singer–she was merely marketed that way–and her red disc particularly pleases, while making no excuses. She is what she is: a perky lounge singer with a calculatedly honeyed voice, a penchant for inane lyrics–often about absolutely nothing–and, in tandem with her husband, Mutt Lange, a masterful command of rhythm, production, and mood. (”I’m Gonna Getcha Good!” is confection perfection.) There’s something oddly hypnotic about much of this project, and it may be simply hearing what Shania can do when she abandons the pretense of being a country singer and concentrates on music. Call this a guilty pleasure–pop, country, or somewhere in between. –Alanna Nash

Shania Twain - Greatest Hits [2004]

Posted by admin on March 30th, 2007

Amazon.com
Shania Twain–recluse, happily married, mother of one–has sold more than 40 million albums with flirty, hook-laden, beat-heavy, country-tinged pop that has all the subtlety of a musical wet T-shirt contest, yet is as irresistible as Swiss chocolate and Pringles. There are a few heartfelt, moon-in-June love ballads on this generous and long-awaited 20-song collection, which includes three new songs along with all the predictable chart-toppers and near-chart-toppers. But it’s the mostly nonstop, uptempo booty-shakers–too often with garish overproduction and vapid lyrics–that, for the unconverted, tend to run together after a while. No doubt, this relentlessly upbeat retrospective will keep Twain’s millions of fans jumping up and down on their sofas.

Shania Twain - Come On Over [1997]

Posted by admin on March 30th, 2007

Amazon.com
The come-from-nowhere success of Shania Twain’s previous album,
The Woman in Me, proved that the world was ready for a combination of traditional instruments, girl-power themes, and dance-pop dynamics. Whether Twain is a modern-day Dolly Parton or a country music Spice Girl is a matter of perspective. But with her third album, she accentuates the sing-along choruses and simple dance rhythms while downplaying the country elements. As a pop move, it works wonderfully for her, earning Twain a valued spot on MTV, VH-1, and pop radio. The emphasis is on fun rather than depth, of course. But no one can accuse her of being stingy: she and her Svengali-like producer/husband, slick-rock king Robert “Mutt” Lange (Def Leppard, Bryan Adams, AC/DC), load down the album with 16 songs, all of them quite radio-friendly. –Michael McCall

Track Lists:
1. Man! I Feel Like A Woman!
2. I’m Holdin’ On To Love (To Save My Life)
3. Love Gets Me Every Time

Snoop Dogg - The Masterpiece [2004]

Posted by admin on March 30th, 2007

Amazon.com
to Considering that most Golden Era rap talents birthed by Dr. Dre have ridden off into the sunset–or are simply much less active and relevant in 2004–it’s somewhat surprising that Snoop keeps churning out the hits like it was 1993. Make no mistake, Snoop’s raps are still very much gangsta, as the title of the disc implies and as “Bang Out” clearly outlines. They’re just a bit more adult-contemporary gangsta now. Despite the heavy pro-pimp overtones, the Doggfather’s smoothed-out timbre and flow mask the harshness of his regressive views. The exceptional production throughout is highlighted by the Neptunes’ contributions, from the catchy, minimalist “Drop It Like It’s Hot” all the way to the ’80s retro-funk jam “Let’s Get Blown.” Steady vocal contributions from funk stalwart Charlie Wilson (Gap Band) and 50 Cent, and nasty beats supplied by everyone from the AlchemistHi-Tek put this one over the top.
