Yanni - If I Could Tell You [2000]

Amazon.com
Modest in both scale and sound, If I Could Tell You represents a less elaborate, more back-to-basics approach to music for an artist lately accustomed to staging Grand Statements (see Tribute). A straightforward, keyboard-based studio recording with minimal accompaniment, If I Could Tell You finds Yanni exploring a pleasant though largely unexceptional middle ground–less overtly romantic than his early ’90s bestsellers In My Time and Dare to Dream, nor as boldly expressive as his rousing early releases. “On Sacred Ground” opens the disc with a choir of electronically treated voices chanting ethereally over gentle rhythms and Native American flute, followed by the flamenco-tinged minor drama of “The Flame Within.” Yanni’s most interesting ideas arrive at mid-disc, starting with the harmonic tribal chanting on the rhythmic “Wishing Well,” followed by a pair of agreeable romantic and dramatic forays on piano and keyboards (”A Walk in the Rain,” “Highland”). Yet compared to Yanni at his expressive best, these selections and others that follow convey a surprising neutrality. Not that this music is objectionable. The stately romantic piano found on “In Your Eyes,” for example, is graceful and appealing. Overall, though, the mood here is tame, reserved–and here’s that word again–modest. After a three-year wait following the globe-girdling Tribute, this approach is a bit of a surprise. –Terry Wood

‘N Sync - Celebrity [2001]

Amazon.com’s Best of 2001
The boy balladeers of ‘N Sync have always kept in step with their competition, but with Celebrity harmonica cameo on “Something Like You.” The disc only fails in its more predictable territory: the title track’s lyrics are hopelessly generic (”Would you be so into me / if I wasn’t a celebrity”). The Swedish-pop machine (also behind , they’ve entered a different race altogether. Members Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez (who co-wrote and co-produced most of the tracks on this album) have drawn on R&B, hip-hop, and electronica to make a remarkably adult mix. While younger fans will love the disc (it is ‘N Sync, after all), older listeners will be surprised and pleased by the Prince-influenced “Gone,” the Miami bass beat of “The Two of Us,” and the Stevie WonderBritney Spears) cranks out two solid dance tracks (”Tell Me, Tell Me…Baby” and “Just Don’t Tell Me That”), but his offerings are hardly as innovative, or as much fun, as the band’s own contributions. Overall, Celebrity, is a triumph, and unlike many of their teen-pop peers, the members of ‘N Sync (or Timberlake and Chasez, at least) promise solid careers ahead. –Courtney Kemp
