Cliff Martinez - Solaris (Score) [SOUNDTRACK] [2002]

Posted by admin on December 31st, 2007

Review by Soaring Heart

Do you ever find Music that every time you listen you are touched in an inexplicable way? It is as if the Music doesn’t just filter through your ears but through your blood, your mind, your heart and your very Being? Well, this score does these things for me. I treasure it and will listen to it for years to come I know. It’s relaxing–I like to fall asleep to it as well as wake slowly to it. (Not a morning person here, folks. I don’t jump out of bed whistling! Heh.) Yet Solaris is also stimulating to me as I enjoy reading/studying to it and find that I remember what I read with an astounding amount of clarity and understanding. Perhaps because the movie stays with me and I think about it’s meaning a lot that this score haunts me so. (I love movies that are up for the viewers’ interpretation!) But I doubt it, for both the score and the movie stand on their own but together–I’m speechless here trying to think of a word…MAGICAL–that is as close as I can get and still doesn’t do it justice. I think because it stimulates me on a spiritual level. In any case, I highly recommend both the movie and this haunting score. Oh and yes, I do love the cover…

Jason Mraz - Waiting for My Rocket to Come [2002]

Posted by admin on December 31st, 2007

Review by J. S. Kaczmarek “jskazzy”

Taken on its own merits, this is a great album. It’s energetic and exciting, it switches styles without seeming disjointed, and it exhibits the skills of a fantastic new vocalist and songwriter. “The Remedy”, overplayed on every Boston station by now, really has a fantastic hook and a strong melodic line. “You and I Both” is a dizzying vocal effort, and other tracks standout as well — “Sleep All Day”, “No Stopping Us”, have a great good-time feel and amazing vocals. The lyrics could be stronger, but they are still compelling.

However, there is a caveat - unbelieveable as it may seem, I know that Jason can do better. I’ve seen two live shows, and while I was happy with this album, i was BLOWN AWAY by his live shows. He has such command and presence, such a powerful and creative voice, and some fantastic musical and instrumental ideas. Unfortunately, the record label packaged all of his songs into the pop/rock mold and out came “Waiting For My Rocket To Come”. If Jason gets enough respect and recognition to be able to produce professional recorded music on his own terms, then we will be in for a real treat. Read the rest of this entry »

True Vibe - See the Light [2002]

Posted by admin on December 31st, 2007

Review by Alan Attebery

This is the second album of the Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) boy-band TRUEvibe. And it is the last album for the group…… at least for Jason, Nathan, and Jordan. Approximately a year after the release of this album, these guys parted ways with founder Jonathan Lippmann, who at the time of this review is finishing the process of replacing the guys.

“See The Light” is a great follow-up to their self-titled 2001 debut album. While the sound of this sophmore album is very similar to the first one, the lyrics are much more heartfelt. The majority of the songs this time around were co-written by one or more of the guys.

The best song on the album, at least in my opinion, is the final track. “Not What I Say (But What I Do)” is a catchy acappella song about how, as Christians, it’s not what we say about Jesus that is important, but what we do. Demonstrating God’s love is what it’s all about. Read the rest of this entry »

Sarah Vaughan - The Ultimate Sarah Vaughan [1997]

Posted by admin on December 31st, 2007

Review by Nikica Gilic

Although giving too much emphasis on various big-bands combinations (she made such beautiful music with smaller groups), this CD gives a good intro to the magic of Sarah Vaughan, the first singer that crops to my mind when I think which modern singer could compare to Billie Holiday…

Although Sarah didn’t stick just to jazz in her performances, even when there is more than a hint of hit parade ambitions in her recordings, she still had more rhythm, melody and substance (in her sound) than all the Diana Kralls and Norah Joness of the world can muster when put together to sing in the jazziest manner available to them.

My personal favorites on this CD are, of course, “Shulie-a-bop” (with John Malachi, Roy…Haynes and “Crazy Joe Benjamin”) and brilliant “No Count Blues”, where she and Basie’s New Testament big band bring out the best of each other… At this song even us amateurs can hear why the players considered her one of the boys (musically and in other respects).

Additionally, since Dee Dee Bridgewater is such a fine and versatile singer, it is interesting to see what songs she picked from Vaughan’s repertoire (could she stray much outside the Verve-PolyGram owned records?) Read the rest of this entry »

Cascada - Perfect Day [2007]

Posted by admin on December 30th, 2007

Review @ musicmp3.ru

Cascada was formed in 2004 in Germany. It consists of three members - charming soloist Natalie Horler and two disc jockeys and producers Yanou and Manian. In a year after the release of their second single Everytime We Touch the band became popular in the UK and the USA. During several weeks the members of Cascada finished the debut album, eponymous to the successful single, and shot a video for it. The promptness of the musicians benefited them - on the wave of Everytime We Touch’s popularity, the public highly appreciated the rest three singles - Miracle, A Neverending Dream and a cover on Truly Madly Deeply by the celebrated Australian duo Savage Garden. The album itself was a true hit in the USA. In 2006, Cascada released a remix work Cascada: The Remix Album. In 2007, Natalie told in an interview that Cascada was working over the second disc. She did not make a secret out of the production. According to her words, the new edition was going to feature lacking so much on Everytime We Touch some ballads - apart from dancing things, and some pop-hits interpretations. The album itself was sure to be ready by the end of the year. The fascinating singer did not fail the expectations of the listeners, and the second studio work by Cascada called Perfect Day hit the shelves in the beginning of December. Karunesh - Call of the Mystic [2004]

Posted by admin on December 29th, 2007

Review by  Jeffery K. Matheus

I discovered the music of this German-born composer/multi-instrumentalist by accident. I was browsing in the new age music section at a certain mega-bookstore, looking for the latest CD from Kitaro (one of my favorite artists.) Well, I didn’t find the Kitaro disc that day, but another CD soon caught my eye, one by an artist I’d never heard of - “Call of the Mystic” by Karunesh. Curious about the cover-art and song titles, I put the CD on the store’s headphone listening station. I was soon immersed in the music, and intrigued by its exotic sounds. Of course, these were only brief sound clips from the album, so as each snatch of music soon cut off, I was left wanting to hear more. I then came home, found the CD on Amazon, and ordered it (sorry to the bookstore, but your prices were just too high! : ) Anyway, to make a long story short, in the several months since then, I have become a major fan of Karunesh (pronounced “Care-un-ish”, which is, I learned, also the sanscrit word for “compassion”.) I have now also collected several titles from his extensive back catalog, and while all of his albums have their own strengths, I believe that “Call of the Mystic” still rates as one of his finest overall releases. With it’s mystical/mysterious feel, warm synth textures, and heavy use of exotic instruments, this CD literally makes me feel better when I listen to it. Read the rest of this entry »

Various Artists - Pacific Moon III [1999]

Posted by admin on December 29th, 2007

Review by M Cox

Pacific Moon is a groundbreaking label, based in Tokyo and Seattle. This recording is a fine introduction to some of their recording artists. It is an eclectic showcase of talents. The track “TEINSAGU NU HANA” is a pop song sung in beautiful Japanese & English, it is a unique track. The two tracks from UTTARA-KURU are wonderful & display their wide range as artists well. MIZUYO KOMIYA has two tracks, one being the amazing epic piece “TSUGARU”, this track is about 10 minutes in length and it is a great arrangement. HAE has the buddhist monk based track, it is so spectacular. Also spectacular is the song “HANNYA SHINGYO”. A great compilation from a new label with the great idea to enclose small incense sticks in the clear spine of each CD. Everytime I get this CD out to play, I am hit with a great fragrance. Of course, the music is good too. Read the rest of this entry »
