Bob Marley hardly faded from the music industry following his death in 1981 as countless reissues, repackaged box sets, genre experimentations and all manner of flotsam have appeared under his name ever since, including this collection of Lee “Scratch” Perry productions from 1970 and 1971 remixed in a reggaeton style. It’s not the strangest re-imagining of Marley material (a disc from a few years ago of Marley songs done up as bluegrass might get the nod there), and it works surprisingly well given the odds, but in the end The Reggaeton Mixes can’t help but sound like a one-trick pony where the immensely charismatic pony up and died 25 years ago. There are mixes that work here, like Chosen Few’s take on a Marley take of a Curtis Mayfield song, “Keep on Moving,” that seems wonderfully fresh and alive, or Los Forasteros, Tiger and Scarface’s”Soul Rebel,” which retains all the confidence and grace of the original while taking on a rap sensibility, or Rad’s mix of “Duppy Conqueror,” a song too good to be ruined in any format, but one suspects each of these mixes works mostly because the source song is so strong to begin with, and Perry’s initial production, so stripped down and Jamaican funky, gives everything a strong rhythmic base. Still, ghosts are ghosts, and Bob Marley done up in urban beats and Latin raps is still unmistakably Bob Marley, and he hardly needs the bells and whistles. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide. The British version of The Very Best of UB40 1980-2000 offers a large collection of songs that are often associated with the group (”Red Red Wine”) and many that later-period fans may not be familiar with. Although the album may not be complete, there is enough quality material to make this an excellent way for casual fans to buy much of the essential tracks from the band. [This disc has little in common with the American release that shares the same title.] ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide. Read the rest of this entry »

On Chant Down Babylon, Bob Marley’s master tapes meet the next generation. Marley hardly needs help selling records, so these studio-engineered duets may reflect an honest attempt at linking his musical legacy with contemporary artists. Even those sympathetic to the concept, though, should wonder if it’s wise to substitute new backing tracks for the original sinuous grooves of “Concrete Jungle” and “Rebel Music.” (To the disc’s credit, the rhythms of “No More Trouble” and “Rastaman Chant” are left largely intact.) And as obvious as the connection between reggae and hip-hop is, Guru (”Johnny Was”) and even Chuck D (”Survival a.k.a. Black Survivors”) have nothing to add to Marley’s perfectly chosen words. Finally, don’t be surprised if your patience wears as several of Marley’s sons help travesty “Kinky Reggae.” –Rickey Wright

Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers have always been interested in music outside reggae, with the band of siblings moving from syth-pop sheen in the 1980s to a more mature and multi-genre sound in the late ‘90s. Dragonfly, Ziggy Marley’s first solo effort, continues this trajectory. Featuring producers Ross Hogarth (Metallica, Jewel) and Scott Litt (R.E.M.), as well as special guests Flea, John Frusciante, David Lindley, and Incubus’s Chris Kilmore, Dragonfly sounds closer to the adult contemporary music of recent Sting or R.E.M. than the reggae of his father. But even if the apple has fallen away from the music tree, Ziggy’s voice has the same forceful yearning and brittle timbre as his father; also like his father, Marley wears his politics on his sleeve (particularly on “Shalom Salaam” and “In The Name Of God”) without being rudimentary. This may not sound like the record reggae enthusiasts pray to Jah for, but Marley succeeds on his own terms, creating a wide-ranging and appealing vision. –Tad Hendrickson

French duo Air’s debut album is a superlatively happy collection of experimental disco-mood sound nestled between ambient soundscape and breathy pop. It’s jazzy and melodic, and mostly laid-back, but not excessively so. There are a few shake-it, shake-it numbers, too, like the absurdly daft hit “Sexy Boy.” It’s snap your fingers and hang out (while reading) music or dance around sexy-slow with your mate music. It’s also the perfect music to do your ironing or some other chore to; it’s hypnotizing wallpaper music. It slips in and out of your consciousness, forcing you to move around with a relaxed smile before you even realize it. Oh, and contrary to sampler fashion, Nicolas Godin and Jean Benoit Dunckel played the instruments themselves. Bravo. –Mike McGonigal
